Manchester United got back into their form. They had found themselves on the wrong end of a poor start but were able to rally back to trounce Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford and secure their first victory of the season. Bruno Fernandes had a hat-trick, and the home supporters were sent home with the type of performance they had been wanting.
From Early Shock to Statement Performance
It was an up-promoted team of Ipswich who took the lead via Leif Davis to shock Old Trafford. Nothing was quite so tight for a while there. Then Fernandes levelled the score at half-time before the second half was theirs for the taking. The captain netting again on the break and a penalty would swing the game in their favour.
Bryan Mbeumo recorded his fifth late goal of the night. But there was nothing for it to be done even if Ipswich did reply in the dying moments. Fernandes was all throughout, scoring and driving the attack and creating. It was a relief after last week’s defeat. It was a turnaround afternoon for Michael Carrick’s side, who demonstrated the ability to rise to the occasion, with quality and fight.
It was a severe penalty on the road for Ipswich, but when they are working well, they can be a force to be reckoned with. The Old Trafford air turned once the second goal was scored, and fans felt it was as if the tables had turned for good. This had led to more dynamic play and increased confidence from players.
A sour day was made sweet as night on the opposite side of the scorebook, as an upset victory brought smiles to people’s faces around the club. The diagram below shows the three points on the board.
