Manchester United Preparing for Major Changes This Season

As Manchester United embarks upon one of their largest squad overhauls in decades, they are aiming to completely transform the appearance of the team by the beginning of the next season. After a season of inconsistent performances, topped off by a resurgence at the end of the season under caretaker manager Michael Carrick, the higher-ups at Manchester United are determined to transform the team into a title-contending project in the coming months.

A central part of this transformation includes a planned clearing out of underperforming players, with some reports estimating that as many as 12-13 current squad players could leave Manchester United this summer. These players include Jadon Sancho, Manuel Ugarte, Andrei Onana, as well as a few younger players who have had difficulty establishing first team positions. The club is aiming to reduce their wage bill significantly to give them the ability to make some meaningful signings in the summer. This would mean that manager Michael Carrick would have the ability to add players that would be able to turn the team into a title challenger rather than sign players that would be temporary fixes.

The most pressing need for United is the midfield, as they are looking for at least two central midfielders that would be able to relieve some of the defensive pressure while also providing more control in the attack. This has linked United to players like Cole Palmer, Bruno Guimarães, and Sandro Tonali.

The Red Devils are believed to still be looking for a dependable left-back and a seasoned striker to reinforce the middle positions and tackle the injury-driven collapses that have plagued the last seasons.*

Regarding the youth aspect, several academy graduates should be incorporated into the first team at United, and, on the contrary, others should go out on loan or leave the club to get permanent moves to teams where they can get first-team opportunities. The club is looking to have a balance between the youthful exuberance and experience of players who can cope with the demands of the Premier League and European competition. There is an expectation that the closing of the gap between Europe’s elite and the tier below will also be felt on the training pitch, with Carrick and his team said to be advocating for a more vigorous and structured approach that demands less from the individual and more from the collective. Moreover, INEOS and the executive board consider this summer to be a crucial point in the club’s long-term strategy. United is still in the fight for Champions League football for next season and the club is in the process of preparing for it.
