Sergio Agüero has commented on one of the key moments in his career. The Argentine forward had already been nearly given the green light to switch to Juve before signing for Manchester City in 2011. He’s since spoken about the reasons the move failed to come off and how the Premier League prevailed.
An Almost Done Deal
Agüero has essentially said that the switch to Juve was done. Discussions progressed, and an agreement was reached. But that all changed when Manchester City got involved. The chance of a game in England, plus City’s role in the Champions League that season, compared with Juve’s absence, helped make the difference.
“I was very close to Juventus; everything was defined,” Agüero has said. Eventually, I opted for the English side as I wanted to experience the Premier League and because they were definitely going to be in the Champions League.
A Decision That Defined a Legacy

In retrospect, that decision influenced all that was to come next. Agüero became the top scorer in Manchester City‘s history, scored the most iconic moment in the club’s modern era, and won multiple Premier League championships. While it’s one of the “what if?” moments in football, Juve’s other option, the alternative path, has not sounded like it is something that Agüero is regretting.
The Premier League provided the challenge he needed and the platform that he desired. The disclosure is a reminder of the thin lines. One offer, one piece of info about the Champions League qualification can turn an entire career. The move yielded a 10-year haul of goals, trophies and enduring legacy for Agüero at the Etihad.
