But there’s another element to transfers that often catches people out – while FIFA lays down rules relating to transfers, it’s down to each national association/league to decide when their registration period will take place. This means each European league has its own competitions schedule and player registration schedule.

LA LIGA & SERIE A CLUBS CAN STILL MAKE SIGNINGS IN SEPTEMBER AFTER LEAGUE KICK OFF
Clubs in Spain and Italy will be able to make moves into September, once their league has started. The later deadline will provide La Liga and Serie A sides with more breathing space to land must-have signings, scupper unwanted moves or bin the spare parts. And with that comes drama as the last dash to close gaps in negotiations can often be frenetic ahead of the deadline for completing registrations. The later deadline will mean these sides will have time to properly consider later additions depending on sporting and financial requirements. Racing to complete the forms at the eleventh hour has made the final days of the Transfer Window a key fixture in football’s calendar.
WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
It means uncertainty for the footballer. Uncertainty over whether or not they’re staying. So a player could run out for one club on Sunday knowing full well talks have already begun over a possible move elsewhere. And uncertainty for supporters, who’ll be keeping a weather’s eye on rumoured moves, medicals and rubber stamped deals.
And it means mayhem for other leagues. Those later Italy and Spain deadlines in September will have a knock on effect elsewhere in European football and inject an extra dose of mayhem into proceedings, particularly if clubs are looking to land a player from abroad.
