Arsenal’s striker debate takes a new turn after an impressive victory

The 2-1 result at the Emirates Stadium has stirred up a new debate on who should be at the front for Arsenal. Kai Havertz equalised and was a major figure in the goal, which means he is now Mikel Arteta’s man in the middle. Viktor Gyökeres spent much of the game on the bench while the question over the top four in Arsenal has become more defined.

Havertz retains all the qualities Arteta values most: penetrative ability, positional sense, and the ability to connect rather than just wait on the edge of the penalty area. He was key to Martin Ødegaard’s goal in the biggest match, and that was the reason why the manager has faith in him. His contribution, all-round, has been good and his form has been good, and you cannot afford to drop him.

The more traditional goal threat of Gyökeres hasn’t been given many opportunities early in the new season. The Swedish forward’s physique and ability to finish are still an asset, but the system now favours Havertz’s flow. The talk about that gap back home after the Chelsea game further fueled the debate, with some claiming it is now a big one.

What the Choice Reveals

It’s not so much about numbers of goals scored; it’s about how they want to attack. Arteta’s team is very flexible, fluid, and rotates attacking, midfield, and defending roles. There’s one thing that can mess up that rhythm: the regular old number nine.

Havertz is likely to stay the first choice until Gyökeres can regularly meet the more extensive requirements of the job. The win for now has, at least, bolstered one side of an argument. But Havertz was the spark in the mix for when it mattered.

While there will be further discussion if the results come in closer or injuries occur, the recent evidence is overwhelmingly one-sided. Arsenal’s forward situation remains unresolved, but following a fine victory, they seem a little clearer than they did a week ago.
