Former Chelsea striker Enzo Fernández was destined to be one of the biggest stories in the summer transfer window after the British giants outbid rivals to sign the midfielder from Argentina for the ‘cork’ on then British Premier League record breaking terms of £125m. It has been more than a few months since City had clear indications about the international’s future at Stamford Bridge, with the forward from Argentina signing a five-year agreement on deadline day.
The club spotted the potential in Fernández and his appeal grew to become a finished signing for Manchester City. Previously in the summer, there had been speculation about City looking to sign an additional midfield target with Chelsea said to be proposing a high price tag for Fernández. The talks escalated as the deadline for the transfer loomed, culminating in the world’s largest player deal.

The transfer further brings together Fernández and Enzo Maresca who recently managed Manchester City under the midfielder’s leadership and is currently working at Chelsea. Fernández comes on the heels of a sterling 2025–26 season when he scored 15 goals and registered seven assists to help Argentina qualify for the World Cup final in 2026.
For Manchester City, Fernández offers another creative and hard-working option in the middle of the pitch, capable of contributing both defensively and in attack. His passing range, ability to control possession and experience at the highest international level could make him an important part of City’s plans across domestic and European competitions. The transfer also adds further competition for places in a midfield already containing several established players, giving the manager greater flexibility when managing different opponents and match situations.
The transfer represents a major change for both clubs. Not only has City made extensive changes to their midfield over the past summer, but Chelsea have also lost a key piece of midfield, and failed to settle on the acquisition of Lamine Camara to replace their former midfield redeployment. Fernández will now be under a magnifying glass as he starts out on a new chapter at the Etihad Stadium.
