One USMNT Position Battle Is Heating Up Before the World Cup

Not all position battles are a matter of two names. Some are decided well and truly by the time we reach kick-off, while the sulking takes place elsewhere. In Mauricio Pochettino’s back three, Chris Richards was the central defensive anchor. In the written record, no credible competitor has arrived. So the fight isn’t for the opening position. If that spot gets vacated, it may be survival of the fittest for the system.

Born March 28, 2000, in Birmingham, Alabama, Richards. This has been central to his role at Crystal Palace under Roy Hodgson and Oliver Glasner. He captained the USMNT against Portugal –March 31, 2026. On January 14, 2026, he was named the 2025 U.S. Soccer Male Player of the Year with 48.6 percent of the weighted vote.

How Richards Won the Role

Youth career Edit Richards played youth soccer for Hoover SC and Birmingham United Soccer Club. FC Dallas let him go when he was 16 years old from their academy. He was with Texans SC Houston, then given a second look, came into the FC Dallas academy in 2017, and signed his first pro contract in April 2018.

Richards and teammate Thomas Roberts flew to Munich for a 10-day trial in May of 2018. Roberts returned to Texas. Richards stayed. The Bavarians made his loan permanent for $1.5 million a year later, in January 2019. He made his senior debut in a friendly against Paris Saint-Germain in July 2018, became a professional with Bayern Munich II in August 2019, and broke into the Bundesliga on June 20, 2020. He made his first start on 4 October 2020, against Hertha BSC. He had made his Champions League debut on November 25, 2020, against Red Bull Salzburg.

Diminished first-team chances saw him loaned to TSG Hoffenheim on two occasions in 2021 and 2022, where he made 30 Bundesliga appearances. Crystal Palace signed him on a five-year deal for a reported €12 million in July 2022.

Club Validation in the Exact System

Richards has moved into his preferred center-back role in a back three under Hodgson and later Glasner. On 24 February 2024, he scored his first goal for Palace in a 3-0 victory against Burnley. He began the 2024-25 campaign as a starter but lost his place early on, regained it in January 2025, and played every minute of the FA Cup run. Crystal Palace won its first major trophy in over 120 years by defeating Manchester City 1- 0 in the final. In August 2025, Richards held the Community Shield aloft. After Tim Howard, he became only the second American to win it.

National Team Lock

The United States Men’s National Team was Richards’ first national team appearance, debuting for the USMNT against Panama in November 2020. He missed the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with a hamstring injury. During the era of 2025, he played in a total of 12 matches and completed 1,004 minutes; amongst them, he scored two goals, including one during the CONCACAF Gold Cup against Mexico in the final. He held Best XI honors at the Gold Cup. A second USMNT center-back with similar experience in Pochettino’s back three isn’t named on the record. The position is Richards’.

The Unspoken Competition

Richards told GOAL: “I know I’m a leader and I want to lead. “I still want to be that guy next year, no matter whose with us at the World Cup.”

Birmingham isn’t the first place that many people think of as a soccer hotbed,” he told FOX Sports after winning Player of the Year. It means a lot to be the first one from Birmingham to win this award. Richards has become an investor in his hometown USL Championship side, Birmingham Legion FC. The U.S. will play Paraguay, Australia, and Turkey in Group D when the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off on June 11.

The battle is not who starts. The question is whether anyone else can.
