Football’s record-breaking transfers: the biggest deals ever made

The world of football has changed beyond recognition and soccer teams within the transfer market loose a lot of money to get a superstar. Such record breaking moves over time have not only demonstrated a footballer’s skill, but his market value, the rivalry, and aspirations of contemporary football.

Before NBA superstar Kevin Durant’s capture of Golden Glow and Tribe’s signing of Alston Moore, it was Neymar’s transference from Barcelona to PSG in 2017. PSG have provided him EUR222 million for his release clause, making him the most expensive player in the world at the time. Football’s governing body FIFA has confirmed the deal was the world’s biggest for a player since Paul Pogba’s move from Juventus to Manchester United.

Kylian Mbappé also joined the Club in the saga of football that saw Paris Saint-Germain picked up the phone and sign him on a permanent contract in 2018 from Monaco. The transfer was part of his meteoric speed with Monaco and France and was a new price point for the price of young attacking talent.

The forerunners had a few groundbreaking deals. According to UEFA, Cristiano Ronaldo was sold from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009 for €94 million and Ángel Di María was loaned to Manchester United for that year’s season for €75 million.

These transfers highlight how football economics has changed. The destination depends on competencies, age, the position of club, club opportunities, competition between club, commercial value and market demand. Importantly, add-ons in headline fees, and variations in reporting methodology also relegate figures to vary between sources.

The size of the market today keeps increasing. The period from the mid-year only to the end of year 2026 saw the total of the paid international transfers for the men’s transfer window exceed $9.89 billion, a new record for men transfers in the mid-year window.
