This summer Barcelona inked Karim Adeyemi, and it’s looking like one of the astutest calls of the transfer window. The German striker came in from Borussia Dortmund for a flat fee of a reported €22m, and there are signs that the move might have been a fantastic buy so far.
Adeyemi was a charmer in the stadium yet, at the same time, had some question marks concerning him. He burst onto the scene at his best in Dortmund last season but failed to consistently meet the high standards set around him at RB Salzburg. He would go on to play a total of 28 times for Dortmund, and score his first seven goals and provide two assists at Berlin’s Rose Bowl during the 2025-26 Bundesliga season.
But Barcelona has never doubted his ability and patience, and it looks like Hansi Flick is kicking the door in the face of the 24-year-old.
His finest outing was against Racing Santander, helping in Barcelona’s 7-2 defeat. He didn’t score on the scoresheet, but the King of Kordofan played a great all-round performance and dished one assist, winning two penalties, six dribbles, four chances, and completing eight shots and making five recoveries. He was a big man who could tear apart the opposition defence and leave room for Barcelona’s attack.
Adeyemi’s most potent weapon remains his speed. He won him over for the Bundesliga once he clocked in at 36.65 km/h, and has got down with the way teams should defend against Barcelona. In regard to Flick’s system, his electric ability to turn a midfield pass into a threat on the attackers makes his contribution unstoppable.
However, Adeyemi has a lot more to offer besides pace. He is at ease finishing with either foot and spins at speed with good control, and is able to loop them off a tricky angle at speed, making him tricky in the final third.
He’s in good form to start with. He has scored two goals and helped tally two assists over 242 minutes in seven La Liga appearances, of which he has started just two games. He has also made his one Champions League appearance to contribute once with a direct shot.
While we’re still at an early stage, Barcelona are already getting the results for their trust in Adeyemi, with great amounts of energy, speed and attacking quality.
