This is bigger than the score, you feel? You mark it on your calendar, you write it boldly and without fear of reprisal, because when your favourite team in the league decides to take a trip to one of the most electrifying fields in the women’s soccer game, you do not shift that over to something. Portland Thorns vs Gotham FC, July 24, 2026 — And with only two months of regular-season grind, both parties are developing headlines and drama. Heading into the match, it is already more than a match of the summer.
Champions on the Road
Well, Gotham, with 2026 on its back, has taken every centimeter of it. The Bats defeated Washington Spirit 1-0 in the 2025 NWSL Championship when Rose Lavelle had an almost impossible shot on goal when she scored in the 80th minute. But one cannot guess what comes next in a title. It took the Gotham season to start off with a splash of 1-2-2 before successive wins propelled this world-renowned club onto the right path. They are in fifth place, 19 points in 11 games, not exactly the position in which a champion would like to be, but far within reach. This title defense may really gain momentum with a victory in Portland in July.
Rose Lavelle Stuff Rose Lavelle is Doing

She is one of the players around whom you rally to revive Gotham. Always has been. In April, Lavelle scored two goals, had the most shots of any player in the NWSL (13), and was the league leader in both shots on target and big chances created in the month. The last third, she is a live wire, hard to tick, and apparently plays her best on the largest stage. July at Providence Park, a rocking, warlike place, is precisely just the sort of stage Lavelle was graduated to.
Berger and the Wall Behind
All are discussing the insult of Gotham, and rightfully so–but slumber on his defence at your own peril. As of this early part of the 2026 season, Berger is the current leader in all of NWSL with five clean sheets. She reigns and gathers, and yet even the really tough stuff, even in her hands, turns out to be routine. Gotham recorded 11 regular-season shutouts in only 26 games last season and had regular-season goals allowed of only 25. The Timbers will be forced to draw something out of the ether that will break this backline.
Esther Gonzalez Keeps on Delivering.
The best defense has a striker who is very goal-savvy, not one who has an eye on him. Gonzalez would end with 13 regular-season goals in 2025 (2nd place in the league overall) and the single-season record in braces (4), and also became the second Gotham player to hit double digits, joining Sam Kerr. Nor has she slowed down in 2026. So the defenders of Portland will waste many hours this summer trailing her on the tape and may not be able to stop her at any rate.
Portland’s Moultrie Moment

Nor is it as though the Thorns were sitting by just to be beaten. And they also have their pint-sized superstar in the making. Olivia Moultrie has now become the youngest player in the history of the NWSL to score 20 career goals, and she played with a fearless style of Wednesday-league play that makes her quietly incapable on her best days. Moultrie is highly of it, and Portland is on top of the league after 11 games -23 points, 7-2-2. No instances of a team taking breaks. This is an organization that is on a mission.
The Coffey-Shaped Hole
One doubt that Portland still has to bring into each big match of the season. Their captain and the midfield star, Sam Coffey, joined Manchester City in the Women’s Super League before 2026. Carmine discovered Jessie Fleming to fill that position, and Moultrie has answered by raising her game a notch higher. So far, they have managed to cope with it. Gotham will dig that midfield all to pieces, and we shall learn on July 24 whether the Coffey-shaped hole has been literally filled, or merely covered.
The Reasons Why This Match Matters
Portland would like to ensure that it can go true to wire to wire. Gotham must demonstrate that the defending champion can take off slowly and soar to great heights. One game, two tales, and a crowded Providence Park to bedevil the din. Circle July 24. You will not want to miss it.
