The Athletic says there are internal discussions happening with Williams’ people about how the Bears structure their offense around him for 2026. It’s not about any public disagreement, but more that the plan works with his timing, decision-making and flow of the offense.

The report says that sources within the team say Williams is learning how play design, coaching structure and in-game adjustments affect his performance. Even more broadly, this follows as the Bears forge ahead with their offensive identity after an inconsistent few seasons on that side of the ball, and much of 2026’s outlook will depend on how well the system continues to develop in unison with its quarterback.

Offensive Scheme Assessment and Development Focus

Williams has been mindful of whether the offensive scheme is set up to accomplish structured reads and navigating the pressure. If you need to process it faster due to the rotations from NFL defenses, it’s more based on rhythm of passing concepts.

Standard development track for a young franchise quarterback entering his pivotal third season in professional football.  Focus on Execution Over Change Which encompasses everything from knowing pre-snap adjustments to protection reads, situational play-calling consistency.

The Bears coaching staff is also doing their part to assist there as formations and motion concepts make for easier coverage identification. This alignment will be important to cut back on hesitation and allow for more efficient offensive tempo during drives.

Areas of Offensive Growth and Execution

Consistency in execution for four quarters is an area of focus for the Bears. The offense has demonstrated some glimpses of efficiency, but to this point in the season is still searching for that regularity needed for long drives and easy opportunities to extend possessions into scoring chances.

Another development focus will be improved chemistry between Williams and the receiving unit. Both have been central themes of offseason preparation, where improving coordination on intermediate routes and adjusting to defensive disguises have also served as the area’s focus. They’re also improving communication at the line of scrimmage to help with protection adjustments.

Working with the quarterback is part of the larger evaluation process for the offensive line. Decreased disruption and improved pocket stability are believed to be key contributors to better pass efficiency.

The tenor of the Bears’ offense is geared toward slow growth rather than overnight transformation as it looks to 2026. This scheme will help Williams play to his strengths moving forward, which are his mobility, field vision and adaptability with passing the ball.

The goal of coaching planning is to create a balance between having enough structure by playing through concepts, while making sure the quarterback can react according to what he sees from the defense. This is viewed as a critical balance for extending offensive growth sustainably.

The flat-line familiar, threaded throughout internally viewed expectations for clearer communication before a cleaner execution to achieve a more consistent offensive rhythm. With the coaching staff and Williams still each working to fine tune his approach, the 2026 season is seen as a significant milestone for fortifying a more stable offensive base of operations for the franchise.
