The build up to the 2026 FIFA world cup has reached its final phase and the USMNT draw sees them in Group D with Paraguay, Australia and Turkiye. On paper, it appears as a nice draw to the co-hosts. On June 12, grass in SoFi Stadium when it faces Paraguay, it will be the first test on whether the squad of Mauricio Pochettino will be able to deal with the pressure of expectation.

The group stage itinerary of the USMNT appears to be easy to follow. However, every rival poses a particular danger. The three matches which will determine whether the USMNT will be the best of Group D or a disaster will be presented here.

Match 1: Paraguay – The Low-Block Nightmare

The USMNT will play Paraguay on June 12 in SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. The most disciplined defensive block of the CONMEBOL at this tournament is that of Paraguay. Their qualifying record was conservative in its nature: 14 scored goals, yet a backline led by captain Gustavo Gomez and Omar Alderete that made them difficult to get past.

As the primary attacking outlet in Paraguay, one can mention Miguel Almirano. The ex-winger of Newcastle adds speed of pressure and the power to charge defenders even in deep positions. Julio Enciso puts in the wildcard creative threat of Brighton and Hove Albion.

Against Paraguay, the USMNT has a test of its own: destroy the low block. The vertical transitions, attacking fullbacks are the basis of the system pursued by Pochettino, whereas the defensive system of Paraguay is designed to withstand pressure and make a counterattack. When the US fails to score early, the transition game of Paraguay with Almiron in charge is more lethal as the game continues.

Match 2: Australia- The Physical Grind

On June 19, the USMNT will play against Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle. At the 2022 World Cup, Australia has made it to the Round of 16. A settled back three of Alessandro Circati, Harry Souttar and Kye Rowles forms the core of the Manager Tony Popovic squad and Mathew Ryan is in the goal and comes with three world cup experiences.

The X-factor is Nestory Irankunda. The Bayern Munich player offers unpredictability that Paraguay and Türkiye will not be able to handle. Directness and creativity are added by Martin Boyle and Riley McGree.

The climate of Seattle will be in favor of the USMNT, but it is the physicality of Australia. The Socceroos have a high press, wing-back-driven 3-4-2-1 with a direct attack. They will not rest on their heels like Paraguay. They will attack the USMNT and put the Pochettino back three under continuous aerial pressure. This defensive weakness was revealed in the 5-2 defeat of the USMNT to Belgium in March.

Match 3: Türkiye – The Group Decider

On June 25, the USMNT finishes the group play with Türkiye at SoFi Stadium. This is the game that will probably give first place in Group D to Turkiye who passed the UEFA playoffs defeating Romania (1-0) on March 26 and Kosovo (1-0) on March 31, and being the winnerless in the World Cup in 24 years.

The attack of the Türkiye is based on creativity, control, and ruthless pressure. The spark of creativity is Arda Güler. The 21-year old Real Madrid forward number 10 is able to deliver quality at a tight angle. The left has Kenan Yildiz who gives directness and goal threats. Hakan Çalhanoğlu is in charge of tempo and produces set pieces at his station at Inter Milan. The one who delivers the winning dribble into the playoff, Kerem Akturkoğlu, gives the pressing work rate that enables the people behind him to be risky.

The USMNT and Türkiye have already played five matches, where each side has won two matches. The most recent time the sides were involved in a friendly is when Turkey triumphed against East Hartford, Connecticut, in June 2025.

The test of the USMNT, in contrast to the first two games is against Türkiye. It is not concerning low block dissecting or enduring physicality. It is concerning matching personal quality. Guler, Yildiz and Calhanooglu are those players who are capable of carrying the day. When the goal is to control the pace, and Pochettino cannot do it with his midfield Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and Yunus Musah, then the USMNT may be overwhelmed.

The difference between Advancement and Elimination

The final tune-up will be the Germany friendly on June 6 at Soldier Field as Pochettino will use the match. The USMNT is valued as being the marginal favorite to take the Group D at +140, with Turkiye at +180, Paraguay at +400, and Australia at +750.

The March friendlies exhibited a team that was still trying to find its defensiveness model. The 5-2 defeat to Belgium on March 29 revealed vulnerabilities that will be exploited by Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye.

Home advantage will bridge a part of that gap. The fan base in the Paraguay opener will be the most hostile the USMNT has ever competed under. Home advantage is however only relevant when the team performs on the field.

The four-year qualifying run is over with. The World Cup of USMNT starts after 48 matches, June 12. The road via Paraguay, Australia, and Türkiye is ready to take. Will it be harder than it appears is going to be determined in 270 minutes of football.
