A spot in the embrace is as hard to come by as it has for many years, so diminutive mere weeks ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup loom on the horizon. The team is less chaotic these days, more tactically disciplined and flexible under Mauricio Pochettino. Impressive displays in Europe and Major League Soccer have created tough calls around who will play, especially in midfield and defence. Pochettino’s system requires lots of running, adaptability in multiple positions and smart pressing the kind of players he is now very much looking to redefine the whole group around.

Midfield Competition Becoming Fierce

Midfield has rapidly become one of the deepest positions in the player pool. Tanner Tessmann is on the way to making a case with top performances in Europe. With his power, composure under pressure and good defensive work he gives balance to the team at midfield and is even more crucial in important matches. The US adds another reliable player who is capable of successfully coping with the rigours of tournament football as he keeps getting better and better.

Aidan Morris is attracting attention for his dogged defensive work and high-energy pressing. That pressing style fits a Pochettino-like system, and managers have been impressed by his willingness to cover ground, win duels, and consistently disrupt opposition build-up play. If he continues developing at this level in Europe, his trajectory could move him from a developing prospect into serious 2026 World Cup roster contention within a highly competitive USMNT midfield pool.

Defensive Depth Creating Difficult Decisions

The race for defense is even tighter than before with the same number of spots but so many players fighting for a chance. Which is why the versatility of Joe Scally is key, as a player who can fill more than one slot across the back line can provide significant tactical flexibility in international tournaments where swings and roundabouts could decimate a squad or two.

One of the factors that made him defensively reliable in wide areas could bring stability in certain contexts against strong opponents. Mark McKenzie has a more immediate push against him with younger defenders coming through the ranks and established members of the side soon to return to selection pressure. His performances in these final weeks and training camps will determine whether he makes the final cut. whether he sticks on the final roster.

Attacking Options Continue To Expand

The US is still trying to find the mix it needs going into the World Cup. Tim Weah is just as important to the USA’s attack, however, he remains one of its most potent attacking threats due to his speed, smart movement and versatility. His versatility across the front line will give Mauricio Pochettino different tactical avenues to explore for certain games, and far more adaptability in terms of shaping against a specific opponent.

Haji Wright has bolstered his bills that way in the past. He is particularly useful against teams that defend deep and are compact with his physical style and also the way he can stretch defensive lines. At the same time, Josh Sargent is slowly climbing a ladder of forward options upward in no small part due to his hold-up play and the smart off-the-ball runs that too often elude goal-hungry players inside the box.

Kevin Paredes is another new speedy asset and one that provides pace coming from midfield, with his direct dribbling familiarising some energy in transition play and late game situations once defences begin to tire.

Experience Still Matters Before 2026

Although that youth movement is growing all the time, there’s still plenty of experience to call on throughout the squad. Still, younger keepers like Gaga Slonina appear to come on stronger every minute and Horvath is still in the goalkeeping conversation as he also has full international experience. When the stage is big, tournament football classifies too often in favour of calm, composure and experience rather than raw proclivity.

The 2026 World Cup is approaching, and spots on the USMNT roster aren’t getting any easier to come by. Betting on the team is primarily a nod to Mauricio Pochettino’s insistence that discipline, tactical variation and consistency are vital for a group of players who need to be transformed from squad to another. Even less than two weeks from the beginning of a World Cup that will be played to such high expectations with home support, the United States must come up with capability from depth, and then have it matter.
