Expecting some cagey and tactical chess on Friday night at the Gtech Community Stadium, Brentford had other ideas. It was a second half from the Bees, who sneaked to a well-deserved 3-0 win. The first forty-five minutes were tight and scoreless, and both teams played each other at a level that was devoid of emotion, before the home side turned into an altogether different animal after the interval, pressing hard, heating up and getting the Blues to fall apart under the pressure.
The storm hit just one hour and a half minutes after Jaidon Anthony had beaten a corner play to the offside post with a return kick; the home fans were left in raptures. Chelsea sought to regain their vigour and command, but their attack was completely lacking in firepower and failed to produce anything of substance in a league without a leader. Brentford smelt blood in the water, defended like lions and waited for the ideal time to attack while counterattacking.

The opportunity came in the eightieth minute, when Igor Thiago found an offside rebound after a rapid break and struck a shot which found the net to give the visitors the lead for a second time and leave Chelsea struggling. Not quite yet, however, was the true fairytale story of the night. But then came Fábio Carvalho, who has been emotionally coming back from a lengthy, arduous injury layoff, and the Bolster, both of whom came off the bench towards the end of the first half.
The home side were truly magical in the second half as Carvalho eventually put the finishing touch to the spell by slotting the cross home to make it 3-0 at the end of stoppage time. It was a cathartic moment, his second goal in his two games after he recovered, and the stadium erupted in laughter. It was a tactical masterclass for Brentford and a statement win for them and a harsh reality check for Chelsea, who are looking for answers now.
