At the start of 2025, Matt Freese did not have any international caps. Not even he was talking about a start to the World Cup. He was the guy of a guy, the trusted, true ally who had served as an apprentice to wait until an opportunity that was never realized. Now flash forward to today, and he is now in contention to become the man between the pipes when the United States opens up World Cup play when they take on Paraguay on June 12. Matt Freese’s story is by far the least realistic of U.S. soccer in years.
A Long Way to Spotlight
A Philadelphian, Freese was a product of the Philadelphia Union academy, but took a rather uncharacteristic step for a goalkeeper in the ascendant: he attended Harvard. In the meantime, he was doing His economics degree, taking exams in the off-season and taking online courses in soccer. No use being fast to pro football, but his all the same.
He joined the Union as a homegrown player in December 2018 and won a clean sheet on Decision Day vs. the New England Revolution to help the club win the 2020 Supporters’ Shield. But three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Month Andre Blake and Freese had never had issues with standing on the bench and picking up the Gatorade cooler.
The Move That Changed The World
In January 2023, New York City FC acquired Freese of Philadelphia on a general allocation sum of $350,000 plus a possible seven-figure amount in performance incentives. That would have cost a lot to someone who had just begun playing games on the highest level. But, at this point, NYCFC got its back, and, over time, so did other people. He was his 2025 MLS season performances were enough to have him ranked second in the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year voting. This type of difference was life-changing to a player who was once considered the backup in his professional life.
A Gold Cup That Captivated a Nation
As one of three goalkeepers at camp, Freese attended the 2025 Gold Cup – behind incumbent Matt Turner on the depth chart, with Chris Brady the third option after Zack Steffen and Patrick Schulte were ruled out through injury. Pochettino, however, surprised many by handing Freese the start from the opening match. He had played the whole tournament and had clean sheets in the first games by the time he began to gain confidence as he got to master every next game.
Then there was the quarterfinal with Costa Rica – the game that changed everything. The game ended in a draw at 2-2, but the Americans moved on to complete the game by penalty shootout, 4-3, as Freese saved three of them. Penalties are a part of my DNA, said afterwards. Meaning “I studied all of those games on the plane; I was prepared. You were very intelligent, clinical, illegible, and an instant celebrity goalkeeper in American soccer.
That rocketed the USMNT to the finals, where Freese and others shone throughout the tournament. However, Mexico was too good for them in Houston as they won 2-1 in front of a crowd of 70,925 — the decisive goal was Edson Álvarez’s effort in the 77th minute that was given after a VAR check overturned an original offside ruling. It hurt. However, Freese had become familiar with the nation, nonetheless.
Breakthrough to World Cup Imagine
By the beginning of 2025, Freese was capless. By the end of that year, he had 13, and you would be a fool to bet against him in the World Cup. When his assistant coach at NYCFC inquired of Said how good a student of the game he is, how much of a worshipper of the craft he was, Said replied as succinctly as possible: When you finally get to know him and to see how much of a student of the game he is, I do not think you would be surprised about him. Potentially Still Some Doubters -And That is Ok.
Not all people are convinced. Alexi Lalas referred to Freese as the current no. 1, but said that told a ton about their goalkeeping situation, and that it still had not left him completely convinced when it came down to it that Freese would be in the nets come crunch time. And Freese would be the first USMNT keeper to ever start a World Cup without ever having played a qualifier. Should he start, he would be playing against Paraguay. It is either a wonderful thing or a sad irony; everything will depend upon to whom you address.
But there is a single fact that everyone cannot deny: throughout the years, Matt Freese labored in the background as a backup player in his career, and now he is not only a star in NYCFC, but also puts him in the first place in the list of players to guard the net during a World Cup on home territory.
