With the Championship transfer window nearing its sudden close following a dramatic finish to the summer window, clubs scrambled to sign players before it had an opportunity to take its next step. Championship clubs have one last chance to make any additions to their team or to fill vacancies before the conclusion of the summer transfer window at 11pm BST on September 1, the English Football League confirmed.
This is a reminder once more of the importance of timing in the Championship on Deadline day. Clubs were involved in permanent transfers, loans and late changes of the team and some talks did continue up to game time. Where agreements were reached prior to the deadline, clubs were provided with deal sheets for extra paperwork as well.

In the final day a number of clubs raised problem areas with the team. The transfer market encompassed veterans, as well as younger talents – and loan sweeps to give the squad depth in the midst of a long and demanding season. If teams are aiming to demote, balancing key roles might be more crucial, and where teams may have just looked to balance up and introduced some competition for the places.
Another feature of the window was that transfer business wasn’t necessarily a tidy affair. In some clubs, deals were not possible by the deadline and in others there were free agents who were still being dealt throughout the season. Top transfer deals such as Wolves from Liverpool, Watford from Manchester United, Sheffield United and Derby County have all been reported recently after deadline day as modern day Championship transfer woes continued.
The transfer window is closed now and it’s all carbs and squeezes on the field. New players need to fit in with their club, managers need to get along with new systems and we’ll start to see whether the Clubs summer recruitment strategy is working out as they hope.
