Coach Mauricio Pochettino has signaled the start of a new international chapter for United States Men’s National Team. He did that by unveiling a 28-man squad. The next window includes four friendly matches vs Peru, Chile, Mexico and Canada. The loudest headline, or whatever you want to call it, from the squad announcement is the arrival of Philadelphia Union sensation Cavan Sullivan. He’s only 16, an attacking midfielder, and this is his first senior call-up, plus it comes with this noticeable wave of younger, homegrown, domestic-based players.

Record inclusion

Sullivan lands a spot on the national stage after an impressive Major League Soccer run with the Philadelphia Union. In that stretch he’s put up six goals and five assists. If he actually sees minutes during the international window, he’ll become the fourth-youngest player ever in the history of the senior program. Pochettino said, more or less, that the decision is purely merit-based. Basically, the teen has kept showing what he can do through top-level club performances. Sullivan isn’t alone either, because two Philadelphia Union teammates, Neil Pierre and Frankie Westfield are also getting their first senior national team appearances.

Youth focus

This roster feels like it’s pointing toward a tactical shift, like building a deeper younger talent pool for the 2030 World Cup cycle. Out of the 28, 13 players are completely uncapped at the senior international level. Along with Sullivan, Pochettino has called up several other emerging teen talents from Major League Soccer, including New York Red Bulls forward Julian Hall and New England Revolution wingback Peyton Miller. The staff’s plan, as described, is to mix players coming up through domestic academies with others who’ve had European loan spells. The goal is a wider tactical base and more internal competition, across basically every positional group.

Roster turnover

To make room for all this new energy- Pochettino left out a few established European-based names who were involved in earlier competitions. Among the most notable absences are: AC Milan winger Christian Pulisic, Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie, and Monaco striker Folarin Balogun. Addressing the shake-up, the head coach stressed that past success doesn’t automatically mean a place anymore. So it’s not “you were good before,” it’s more “you have to keep earning it.” The four-match slate ahead creates a real test, a sharp environment for the squad’s newest members to measure themselves against tough opponents across North and South America.
