Two English players are back home after spending some time in Ligue 1. Crystal Palace have signed Strasbourg man Ben Chilwell permanently, and Everton have joined Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon. Both transfers were made at the end of the summer window, and each got a new lease on life in a familiar environment.

Familiar Faces, New Chapters

There is especially a warm welcome for Chilwell’s return. He was loaned to Selhurst Park for the second half of the 2024-25 season, where he assisted the hosts in winning the FA Cup. He’s been in France for a year, and now he’s decided to make it permanent. It’s amazing to be back, he said. He said. Well, it’s good to see some old friends. Palace gain experience and competition at left-back with the addition.

Maitland-Niles joins Everton from Lyon, where he made over 100 appearances in three seasons. He can play full-back or in midfield, and he’s another solid option for David Moyes. He will be reunited with a league he’s familiar with and will come out of a three-year Premier League exile.

Settling Back Into English Football

They are now the same two players in a marginally new situation as they adjust to the rigour of the Premier League again. The action is quicker, with more consistent weekly pressure than in Ligue 1. But they also contribute experience from games played away from home and a steely resolve that comes from the decision to come back. These are more than just additions to the squads for the new clubs.

They’re unfinished players in English football. Both of them have an opportunity to revive their careers and return to the forefront, and they can find a way back home through hard work despite spending time overseas. But the Premier League now has two more English names joining, and two more tales of second chances are underway.
