They both held our gaze with this photo on December 18, 2022. One and a half billion people worldwide – around a fifth of Earth’s population – abandoned all other tasks to watch the FIFA World Cup Final between Argentina and France. From every corner of the earth, time zones and barriers dissolved as the globe became a single audience.

Entertainment these days is so fragmented. Algorithms and streaming services mean that it is incredibly rare for all of us to be unified by one cultural moment. Football is still one of the few exceptions. The 2022 World Cup Final perfectly demonstrated how sport is the only remaining global forum for raw, unpredictable human drama.

The game provided such a dramatic narrative for fans across the planet. This was more than just a tactical battle; this was a passing of the baton. Lionel Messi’s quest for sporting immortality clashed with the drive and will of a determined young French striker, Kylian Mbappé, who’d found himself a hat-trick by the final, yet was determined to keep the game alive. The living rooms, the fan parks, the hushed bedrooms all transformed into a singular theatre where every crunching tackle, every extra time comeback and every painful spot-kick was experienced equally.

For two exhilarating hours, the world was unified; borders irrelevant, language a mere vehicle for the shared narrative of exclamations and adoration, frustration and agony. What the game offered was clear evidence that the world might feel more fractured than it has ever felt, and yet all we truly long for is shared emotional connection, and in those final seconds football’s only role was to reduce the vastness of our globe back to one room and one panting beat.
