And then there are the footballers who come to a World Cup as a household name. And then some make their way the harder way–without a fuss, by diligence, by a record of transfer that continues to rise and rise. Auston Trusty is squarely in the latter category. In the case of the USMNT back-three chat, the difference is a matter of life and death.

A Life Made up of Bits.

The history of the transfer speaks for itself. In 2022, Trusty was sold to Arsenal by the Colorado Rapids at a cost of 1.6m. One year later, a fee of £5 million was paid out by Sheffield United. Celtic paid £6m in 2024. No sensational loan deals or last-minute miracles, there were no headline-making deals on how to get the defender out of a loan or the sudden finding that he is better than the previous one who had been paid. Such a course does not occur accidentally.

During this Celtic, Trusty played 26 league games, and 24 of them started, and scored two goals in seven Europa League games. Precisely about that European background, it is worthwhile. Celtic was in the 2025-26 qualifying play-offs of the Champions League but lost in a penalty shootout, which relegated it to the Europa League league phase. It was not the big stage Celtic had dreamt of, but it was still competitive continental football – intense and intolerant – and Trusty provided it.

The Celtic Context

The thing is that playing in obscurity and playing as Celtic is not the same thing. Weight to that shirt–a standard of expectation that no longer is completely met by a domestic title each season. Trusty was a staple when Celtic clinched a fifth successive Scottish Premiership title in dramatic style on the last day of the season, on a last-minute comeback against Hearts that was the epitome of a campaign that was fought under real pressure.

Throw in two Concacaf Nations League championships with the USMNT, and you have a 27-year-old defender who has won some gold, experience playing on big occasions, and an ever-expanding international resume. It is prime years to a centre-back, and he is starting them in fine shape.

Meaning to the Back Three.

Trusty was part of those who were singled out as one of the best players in the USMNT March 2026 camp, and Pochettino rewarded it with a spot on the final 26-man World Cup team. The question of whether he belongs or not in a team is not a tactical question, but rather when he plays.

Trusty is fifth on the list of the pecking order of centre-backs, with only six caps. But the formation talk transforms that image in a great way. In case Pochettino decides to use a back three – and, again, recent training sessions, such as the 5-1 win over Uruguay, where Trusty figures prominently, tend to indicate that it is a viable choice – then his physical presence and left-footedness will complement well with the passing range of Tim Ream and the athleticism of Chris Richards. The other person in that discussion is Mark McKenzie. Both have demonstrated their capabilities to perform the job at this level.

The Quiet Case

The name that the casual American fans will be chanting when the previews of the tournament come around is not Trusty. When the big previews are being drawn, he will not even be spoken of in the same breath as Pulisic or McKennie. Yet those defenders who understand their role, who have been through the European competitions and who continue to force their way into teams based strictly on merit, are the ones who make campaigns when they make a deep run.

There is promise and pressure on the USMNT as it enters 2026. If the back three retains, there will be something that Auston Trusty can claim.
