Aston Villa may not have the numbers that they would have wanted from the getaway at the start of the season but manager Unai Emery knows that getting the balance right in the final third will take time. The Spanish coach, rather than panicking because there’s no goals in his picture, seems to be working on boosting his forwards’ belief and consistency.

Villa have thrown plenty of money at their attack, and are more competitive in front of goal. The players are as varied as their strengths, and Emery is tasked with finding matches to create goals and with integrating his tactics. It takes time, especially if new players have to get used to a new system or teammates.

One of easiest things to see is the goals in a performance, but Emery knows that isn’t always true for attacking players. Movement, pressing, space and link-up and passing with the other teams are all integral to the Villa attack. A forward can be holding up the game, not be able to score the goal and still be a very important part of the game.

The manager will also be seeking to forge better bonds with his forwards by spending more time with them in the minutes. Knowing when to make runs, where the ball can be thrown into unoccupied areas and how to get the ball into space and how to take advantage of it can be learnt through practice.

This may appear to be important for Villa fans. The pressure can be created by a few missed opportunities particularly when there is great expectation but an attack player can need as much confidence as tactical advice.

With his background as a preeminent authority on philosophy, Emery is able to be calm and steady. He is well aware that forwards can find motivation after languishing periods in the team and paper into goals and turn corners. Villa isn’t scoring for now, but that could be frustrating for him, but Emery seems happy to give his opposition time and space to get into scoring form.
