No Balogun, no problem: Everton put transfer frustrations behind them

Many remarks should be made about the confusion that took place at the transfer window.Having a day at the transfer window that was all tangled up is enough to make Everton feel frustrated. They had also been planning the huge swan-dip deal for Monaco striker Folarin Balogun but were held back at the end when concerns were raised around his medical. After the deal had collapsed David Moyes had only one acknowledged senior striker, Thierno Barry.

Everton twice rallied to level with Manchester United at this home on September 6 before fighting to a dramatic 2-2 draw. After the turn of the half, Bryan Mbeumo got the first strike as Mark Toffees levelled for the Toffees. It was then in the 88th minute that Benjamin Šeško returned to the fray to set up United’s lead and look as though he gave the away side the ball in hand.

A difficult week was followed by an optimum reply.

After 42 minutes, in stoppage time, Everton debutant Ainsley Maitland-Niles found the back of the net with a brilliant shot from 38 yards to fill the half-time deficit. It was the final goal of a spirited side, Moyes said himself it was not a full-strength team.

It’s not a solution to Everton’s recruitment nightmare, but it is a useful device to give the Blues: Momentum. Yet after three league games, the Toffees look like those qualities, youth and new arrivals can make up for a lack of depth and prove enough for the moment.

For Moyes, it’s straightforward: Everton did not sign Balogun, but they still have plenty of energy to ensure their season will be exciting.
