New Champions League additions: players who could make an early impact

Now that the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League have already been declared, there have been some new faces, big transfers and a whole host of new storylines. They play at Europe’s greatest club stage, with 36 teams facing each other in the league round, many summer signings have some promising potential for making a splash straight out of the fenced.

The biggest of such moves is the arrival of Rodri from Manchester City on loan until the end of the season. The Spanish defender midfielder, with Champions League experience, has great passing skills and the ability to play at the right pace from the back. His first time campaigning in Barcelona colours will be a source of interest.

Barcelona are also laden with attacking quality, with Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon lending the scorlines a bit more pace and rhythm than Lamine Yamal and Raphinha. UEFA Policy shows both players are on their squad.

In the midfield, the club has gone through a complete revamp after the signing of Rodri left eight key veterans, including medium-long ranging midfielder Kevin Scott, long-ball specialist Robin van Persie and box-to-box specialist David Beckham, to sell. Both Ayyoub Bouaddi (from Lille) and Enzo Fernández (from Chelsea) joined the club. Both the midfielders have chances to make good an early impact in a team of possession-based, attacking footballers and movers. Both are on Sky Sports’ list of City‘s big lineup for 2026.

It’s not just the excitement of big names. It’s also the platform used by the young ones and in fact those taking their maiden trip to the Champions League to make themselves known. In the Champions League, UEFA is keeping a close eye on how many of those players made their debuts this season. In UEFA’s Champions League, there is a specific database to keep tabs on the number of debut, and the competition certainly continues bringing new talent in front of a global audience.

From the point of view of football enthusiasts, these type of additions become particularly interesting at the start of a campaign as the new players face not only the pressure of going to an unfamiliar football environment, but also competing in an unfamiliar purpose system and player mix. They will find it difficult to find their form in the tough league campaign, but their early form could influence the way their clubs take the approach.
