This club, which managed to secure promotion to the Bundesliga’s highest tier for the very first time in their history, is having a sensational beginning to their season. The River Islanders astonishingly defeated Bundesliga 2023-24 winners Leverkusen on their very first game in the top flight of Germany, and then overpowered Bundesliga opponents Borussia Mönchengladbach twice. With a point against Bayern seeming feasible when their opponent’s top scorer Harry Kane scored the winning goal in the 73rd minute to seal the victory for the defending champions, however, the story was far from over.
But these are still very early days, and Elversberg’s most expensive acquisition so far, Cole Campbell, spoke to NDTV about how his club’s fearless mindset has left the football world wide-eyed with disbelief. During the virtual media interaction, Campbell-who cost Elversberg a club-record sum of six million euros from Borussia Dortmund-delivered the memory of his first-ever Bundesliga goal against Leverkusen in Elversberg’s remarkable 3-2 victory, as he talked about how he felt that the pressure created by his hefty price tag didn’t affect him.
Since his move from Dortmund in the summer, Campbell was grateful for the support from his club but was determined to do everything he could for the team: “Obviously, there is pressure that comes with it, but on the other side, there’s also a lot of trust from them to believe in me. Since I’ve been here, I have felt very good. Everyone in the club is supporting each other. Regardless of those things, I want to perform and do my best in every single game.”
On the topic of whether attitude changed before Elversberg’s game against Bayern, Campbell shared: “The mindset we take into every game has to be the same. We want to give everything we have and perform the best we can. At the end of the day, we are taking it day by day. We are training hard and focusing only on the next match.”
