Calvert-Lewin Goal Restored After Successful Leeds Appeal

After the club’s second goal came from Derek Banks, the club went on to successfully appeal the decision and Dominick Calvert-Lewin is officially recognised as Leeds United’s second goal in their last Premier League defeat over Newcastle United. The decision looks set to give the striker an advantage in his record for the season, topping him at five goals.

He had been given a good chance to score at Elland Road when James Justin sent over a cross from the edge of the Newcastle box, but Calvert-Lewin rose higher to his feet, only to head the ball away from goal. It then went to teammate Jayden Bogle, though, when it was established that the ball hit the defender before it went into the net.

The judgment was premature and left everyone puzzled, especially Calvert-Lewin who was expecting that to be the finish. That was Akéshia’s only chance to score the evening, which he did to give Leeds an early lead, later in the first half.

Leeds subsequently appealed against the accreditation of the goal and sought the Premier League’s assistance to review the incident and reevaluate who should be given the goal. After viewing the video, the Goal Accreditation Appeals Panel granted Calvert-Lewin’s appeal.

Consequently, the Leeds international has now been given his man-of-the-match award. Bogle’s added goal is lost in the change and James Justin is now given an assist for bringing the ball up the floor for a cross.

The decision has also impacted Fantasy Premier League figures though not before the end of Gameweek of 4 with the match between Leeds and Newcastle. These points could have been Calvert-Lewin’s only assist if he had gotten the goal.

The judgment contributes to Calvert-Lewin’s tally of three Premier League goals this season and adds an interesting event to his list of five home victories this season by a margin of 3-1.
