An enthralling new page was written in the annals of international football in Europe as the Netherlands battled to a 1-1 tie against Germany in the UEFA Nations League. The match pitted one of the most fascinating head-to-head encounters in international football, as Xavi Hernández led his first match in international football at the helm of the Dutch side and Jürgen Klopp coached Germany for the first time in his managerial career.

Germany assumed control of the game in the early stages, exhibiting its customary pressing tactics orchestrated by Klopp in the technical area. Germany’s superiority translated into a goal in the 32nd minute when a fast counter-attack on the right flank led to a deflected shot that fell perfectly into the feet of the midfield player Felix Nmecha, who converted it effortlessly into a goal.
Trailing by one goal, Xavi’s team stepped onto the pitch in the second half with a newfound intensity and discipline, slowly but surely pushing back Germany with their crisp and dynamic build-ups and pressing. Substitutes Mexx Meerdink and defender Denzel Dumfries put pressure on the German keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who saved some crucial shots for the visiting team.
When the match was entering its extra time period, perseverance from the Netherlands eventually broke through the strong resistance of the German defenders. In the 92nd minute of play, Ruben van Bommel provided a fantastic out-of-the-boot pass in the penalty area. Cody Gakpo managed to get there and scored a fantastic volley shot right from the far post.
The goal brought a well-deserved draw for Xavi’s Oranje team and took away the win from Jurgen Klopp in his first match as national team coach.
