There are a few of the major competitions in football, and two of them are arguably the biggest such tournaments: the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. In the Premier league, it tests clubs in entirely different ways.
What do you think of that approach is the Premier League approach?
The top level of domestic football in England with 20 clubs is the Premier League. Each team matches 34 other clubs twice a season, for a total of 38 games for each team. They win three points and draw a point; the team at the top is the English winners.
The consistency is its greatest hurdle. Clubs have to play through a complete league season, with points they have earned at any other game being a factor in the race for the final league championship. The tournament is held in a promotional and relegation format, which makes the quest for promotion at the top and relegation at the bottom that much more significant.
The Champions League is Europe’s ultimate competition.
The Champions League is a competition for top from European domestic leagues. It has not operated on the basis of a group stage, but a league phase since the 2024/25 season. Each club will play against 8 different clubs, 4 home matches and 4 away.
Nine teams (9th-24th) advance straight into the round of 16, whilst the remaining eight complete knockout stages. The teams with ranking 25 and below are eliminated from European competition.
So, which is more difficult?
There is a variation between them. The Premier League is a league that values quality over a number of games, quality in the depth of the squad and the points that can be added weeks after weeks. It’s important to them that the Champions League is more about a competition against the very best of Europe – and, sometimes, most extreme pressure comes from the knockout stages.
In this regard, the Premier League is a marathon and the Champions League is a trip with any step being a new high-stakes scenario. But for football fans, it is this difference that brings both events together.
