Manchester United have got their hands on the 17-year-old midfielder Karim Cassim, coming over from cross-town rivals Manchester City. He’s a highly regarded England Under-17 international and he has now completed the shift to Carrington after the Premier League officially ratified the registration process between the two Category 1 academies. Cassim, who came through the City youth setup for his developmental years, managed to make a real mark by lifting the FA Youth Cup while he was at the Etihad.
Academy crossing

This move is one more pretty sharp play by United’s technical hierarchy to pull top-level domestic talent straight from primary rivals. The transfer has gone through a mandatory regulatory review process that is meant to handle direct player transfers between top-flight youth academies. Jason Wilcox, United’s technical director, who once managed City’s youth development, is still leaning on that same background to keep strengthening United’s talent pipeline at Carrington.
Midfield profile
Cassim tends to function mainly as a central midfielder, but he’s not stuck in just one lane, he can adapt between deep-lying responsibilities and box-to-box duties. People have noted his defensive work rate, his recovery pace and his pressing ability, and in the Under-18 Premier League North he gained important experience in games that actually mattered. Internationally, he’s earned caps up to the England Under-17 level, which helps set him up as one of those key prospects within his age group.
Strategic integration
All this signing also reinforces Old Trafford’s longer-term academy idea, nurturing elite talent so it can eventually slide into the first team. Cassim is joining United’s Under-18 setup alongside other recent youth arrivals, and he’s expected to fill some pivotal roles within the youth development squad. With him on board, United should keep momentum on expanding their youth infrastructure as he starts getting ready for competitive academy fixtures.
