Premier League Round 3 Refereeing Decisions Come Under KMI Panel Review

The Premier League has announced the findings from the Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel which has given an independent evaluation of the key decisions made by the referee and VARs in Round 3 of the 2026/27 Big Four season up to date.

The panel looked at 18 referee Key Match Incidents and determined that 94 per cent of all onfield decisions made were correct. Once a VAR intervenes, accuracy gets to 100 per cent. The 5 VAR reviews were performed throughout the round and the 5 VAR reviews were supported by the panel, with 5 VAR reviews not missed.

Nottingham Forest’s Neco Williams Vs Tottenham Hotspur – Key Highlights On the ensuing shot, it appeared Williams pried the puck free and scored but a handpass occurred before the puck went into the goal. The panel unanimously agreed to disallow the goal with reasons given as, “A goal may not be scored directly from the hand or arm, even if it is accidental contact.

One of the other decisions made was about a Kevin Danso who had a hand in a goal in the Tottenham game. The panel agreed that Danso was off-side and definitely obstructed the keeper’s line of sight. Therefore, the action that VAR took to reverse the set up was completely justifiable.

The panel also glimpsed the aftermath of Newcastle United’s Isidor Wilson having a penalty withheld after it was interfered with by Brentford striker Keane Lewis-Potter. Four of the five voted for the continued holding action, which they felt was enough to defend Isidor from making any movement towards the ball.

This latest review comes on the back of the PL’s greater emphasis on transparency of coverage of officiating. The KMI Panel’s weekly evaluations will be released during the season and can be seen to see how key refereeing and VAR decisions are judged following Ballot.
