Early dominance and unlucky breakthrough

Real Madrid took full control pretty quickly, during their La Liga game against Elche at the Martínez Valero Stadium. The visitors pushed forward early and created a few decent sights, still forward Vinícius Júnior somehow wasted several chances to go ahead. Then, the opener came in the twenty-fifth minute, from this unluckily conceded phase by the home team. Arda Güler swung in a curling free-kick, it bounced off the wood, hit Elche goalkeeper Matías Dituro and somehow ended up over the goal line… as an own goal.

Extending the advantage

Just eight minutes after that opener, Real Madrid pushed the score higher with a smart, well timed attacking move. The summer signing Yan Diomande sent in a clean cross, right into the penalty area, and Kylian Mbappé was waiting there. The French forward finished from close range, to record his seventh league goal of the season so far. Mbappé did need a bit of medical attention for a moment after the collision with Dituro during the goal, but he carried on and stayed on the pitch, he didn’t really blink. So Real Madrid went into halftime with that solid 2-0 cushion, feeling pretty comfortable.

Elche restoration of parity

The second half became a different story. Elche shifted the tempo and pounced on small defensive mistakes from the visitors. Abiel Osorio got things moving in the seventy-first minute. He rose up sharply and headed in a cross that Lucas Cepeda delivered, beating keeper Thibaut Courtois. With their supporters behind them, Elche kept pressing and they pulled things level in the eighty-third minute. Substitute Fer Niño- took the ball inside the area and placed a low shot into the bottom-left corner, and suddenly it was 2-2.

Stoppage-time heroics

With points slipping away, José Mourinho made his move late in the second half, bringing on Carlos Espí, age twenty-one, from the bench. The change paid off almost instantly. One minute into stoppage time, Jude Bellingham started it off with a strong carry near midfield- then he slid a pass down the inside channel toward Mbappé. Mbappé then squared the ball across the goalmouth, and Espí was there to tap it in at the far post and the final 3-2 win meant three points for Real Madrid, and they ended up level with Barcelona at the top of the table.
