Sporting CP began their Champions League journey with a hard-earned 3-1 win at the Estádio José Alvalade against Galatasaray. The Portuguese side fought off an early deficit and asserted themselves after the break to secure three key league matchday 1 points.
Early Shock and Recovery
Five minutes in, Galatasaray were the first to score in their own net as Gonçalo Inácio fired home under pressure. The visitors were a little sharp in the first half, but Sporting started picking things up. Geny Catamo evened the score in the 27th minute with a sharp finish, just before the break, turning the tables in a vibrant Alvalade.
Second-Half Control

Sporting were in control after the break. The hosts went 2 goals ahead, with Luis Suárez hitting a penalty just before the hour mark, before Rodrigo Zalazar hit a hilarious free-kick into the top corner six minutes later. The goal of the night effectively ended Galatasaray’s hopes of a comeback. The Turkish side was vigorous late on, but failed to find any route back.
A Positive Start
The victory puts Sporting on the front foot in the new league-phase system. Suárez has started the season brightly, and Zalazar has applied the finishing touch. The outcome adds to a poor away form for Galatasaray, who are looking for a first point.
One game isn’t a campaign, but the fact that Sporting have fought back from their immediate downfall and exited the match with plenty of energy gives them a positive start to their first European campaign of the season.
