The 199th Manchester derby at Old Trafford flipped in the 23rd minute. Manchester City got reduced to ten men,and it happened fast. Midfielder Phil Foden- was shown a straight red card for violent conduct after an off-the-ball altercation with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. Once they were down a player that early, Manchester City had to pivot, more or less, moving into a disciplined defensive stance, basically accepting pressure from the home side and staying stubborn about it.

Manchester United couldn’t make it count

Even with 54 percent possession and a one man advantage that lasted for more than an hour, Manchester United still couldn’t crack it, or rather, didn’t break the stalemate. The hosts looked close enough several times too, with Marcus Rashford- clipping the post from a free kick before the interval, and then Kobbie Mainoo smashing the woodwork early in the second half. Manchester City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma kept things tidy, making key saves, including that late one in stoppage time against Bryan Mbeumo.

A contentious but decisive goal

The real turning point came around the 60th minute. A deflected cross from Joško Gvardiol dropped to Erling Haaland at the back post, and he finished into the roof of the net. At first- there was an offside flag, but then a lengthy Video Assistant Referee check was done. Ultimately, officials confirmed defender Patrick Dorgu actually played Haaland onside. Also, Enzo Fernández was standing in an offside place, though it was judged that he didn’t touch the ball or mess with the play at all so, the goal stayed.

Strategic stakes and table talk

That 1-0 win meant Manchester City have now won four Premier League matches in a row to start the 2026–27 campaign. They’re level on 12 points at the top, sitting alongside Arsenal. For Manchester United, the home loss leaves them 13th, with four points from the first four matches. In short, this result gave Manchester City three points in manager Enzo Maresca’s first local derby since taking over, and it looked like the plan held under stress too.
