Early control and goalkeeping heroics

Manchester City asserted early control at a rain-soaked Estádio do Dragão,, really owning the ball against an FC Porto group that had this unbeaten home run stretched across 33 matches. Under head coach Enzo Maresca making his European debut with the club, City kept carving out chances, especially in that first forty five minutes. But Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa wasn’t having it. He came up with one fantastic save after another, and somehow kept the home side level. Costa clawed away a nasty header from Erling Haaland, then somehow pulled off this remarkable double save to deny both Haaland and Rayan Cherki on the rebound, so the first half ended goalless even though City were clearly the better side.
Breakthrough after the interval
The deadlock got broken just two minutes into the second half, in the 47th minute, when City turned their possession into a lead. Midfielder Enzo Fernández delivered a very precise cross into the penalty area, letting Haaland outmuscle defender Jakub Kiwior and then direct a downward header past Costa, into the bottom corner. The first goal paid off for City’s persistent attacking play, and still it triggered an answer from the Portuguese hosts as they tried to surge forward.
Porto pressure and defensive resilience
After City scored, Porto leaned into more pressure, and for a spell City lost the smooth momentum. The hosts kept testing things from the edge of the box, including a curled shot from Alan Varela that just missed. Porto also created a few nerve-check moments, especially when home forward William Gomes pressed City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma while he had the ball, leading to this chaotic clearance that ended up bouncing wide. Still, even with those uneasy stretches, City’s back line, held together by Ruben Dias and Marc Guéhi, managed to protect the clean sheet.
Late clincher and milestone victory
City closed it out in stoppage time, the first minute of it, with a sharp counter. Substitute Rayan Aït-Nouri drove down the flank and slipped in an accurate cutback into the area, and then Haaland finished it off calmly, slotting the ball home for his second goal of the night. The finish took Haaland to- 167 goals for Manchester City, and it was also his 59th UEFA Champions League strike, sealing the 2-0 win. It also broke Porto’s long standing home unbeaten streak, and basically handed City maximum points to kick off their European run.
