Jamie Vardy makes championship return after signing for Burnley

Jamie Vardy is now officially out of the way of England football as he has agreed a deal to appear for Burnley, signing until the end of the 2026/27 season.

The 39-year-old striker is a free agent having played last season for Italy’s Cremonese. Before Vardy moved back to England he had found the net seven times, in 29 appearances, in Serie A.

The transfer should strengthen Burnley’s front row as they contest their relegation from the Premier League and bounce back from a tough start to life in the Championship. Vardy had just picked up his second point after the five initial league games of the Clarets’ campaign.

Vardy is best known for his extraordinary stint at Leicester, and his career was straightforward; during his time with the club, he went on to score one of the biggest goalscorer records of all time for the city. He has been instrumental in Leicester’s miraculous Premier League success with the team winning the 2015/16 season and also the FA Cup back in 2021.

Head coach Nicky Hayen thinks that the experience and leadership Vardy will bring to the table will help bring out the best in his team, while the striker himself is thrilled about playing before Burnley’s rabona army.

The signature is also a sign of another odd string of moves in Vardy’s football career. He started playing football in the Football League at the age of 25, passed through non-league football to end up as a Premier League champion and England international.

Now his job is a more peculiar one as he’s tasked with getting Burnley closer to the top of the Championship table and back on their feet. Vardy would offer the Clarets just the kind of attacking flair that they need with his pace and movement, as well as his finishing and attacking ability.
