Sudden Shift

Enzo Fernández finished a £125 million deadline day switch from Chelsea to Manchester City, straight back with manager Enzo Maresca. At first, the idea was to ease him into things gently, because his preseason got bumpy after- the 2026 FIFA World Cup. So naturally he was put on the bench as a sub for the Premier League match vs Coventry City at the Etihad Stadium, but then it flipped fast. Midfielder Nico O’Reilly got a back problem during the pre match warm up, and that little snag basically changed everything. Maresca ended up throwing Fernández into the starting XI almost immediately, like literally days after the signing was locked in.
Immediate Impact
Even with the sudden pivot, Fernández slipped into Manchester City’s midfield rhythm like he’d been there longer. He showed quick composure and teamed up with fellow newcomer Elliot Anderson to keep things calm in the centre. Around the 26th minute- he sparked the chain that brought the first goal, pushing forward from the right side of midfield. That forward pass was important, it helped shape the build up and set Erling Haaland up to finish, giving the home side a 1-0 win.
Statistical Dominance
Over 76 minutes, Fernández looked sharp, before he was replaced by Ayyoub Bouaddi. He completed 66 passes from 73 attempts, meaning 90% pass accuracy, and he kept steering the tempo whenever City had the ball. Also, he sent eight passes straight into the final third, plus he created a clear goalscoring opening. One potential assist didn’t stand, because Haaland’s second-half strike was ruled out after an offside flag went up. Defensively, he stayed disciplined too- clean ball recoveries, solid tackles, and no fouls committed at all.
Promising Future
After the match, Enzo Maresca said he was fully satisfied in his post-game press conference, especially with how well Fernández handled the abrupt tactical change. That emergency debut, it turned out, wasn’t just a moment, it showed technical adaptability and the instant readiness you want when expectations are already sky high. In his first outing he earned confidence from the coaching staff, and also from the Etihad supporters. Now City can shift attention toward its opening UEFA Champions League fixtures, with Fernández already having laid a decent groundwork.
