It’s only the first matchweek of the 2026/27 Premier League season, so it’s still far too early to say for certain who will end up where in the table. Plenty of time left with 35 games remaining, several wins or losses could move the bracket in a matter of months.
Up at the top, Manchester City and Arsenal are both on nine points, with Hull City pleasantly surprising everyone after being promoted to the Premier League back into a joint second place on seven. Champions rivals Chelsea are also in prime position, six points further back. But the distance between lots of teams is very little as well. A gap of just two points within three between Brentford, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Everton and Leeds United is all ninth have between them.

The Premier League schedule is difficult, and this can be one of the main factors that can see notable shifts in the table. If the teams next to a team are losing points then this team can easily be winning and building up some points despite climbing up a few spots. Draws can make all the difference, too, because a couple of teams are playing just a point or two apart.
New managers and summer signings can make further changes as well. For instance, while Chelsea have been making a raft of changes in the wake of their defeat, Manchester City are also a much stronger team these days thanks to Xabi Alonso. New players and tactics need to get established, which can take a while.
A fixture list will also be major factor. Arsenal will do it before they take on Sunderland, Brighton and Liverpool later in the autumn.
On the other side, neither Fulham nor Coventry City can claim a point, whilst Aston Villa and Tottenham have one apiece. The early contests are not an indicator of an ongoing battle at the bottom, though.
The early Premier League table is but a snapshot with injuries, transfers and tough fixtures capable of altering outcomes. As the season goes on, the true picture will become apparent.
